When was the first acid rainstorm? The first recorded acid rain storm was approximately in 1852 when a scientist named Robert Angus invented the term “acid rain” that means polluted rain. Acid rain increases the acidity of soil and water which affects vegetation growth and also kills fish.  Regular rain water will have a pH (which is a way to measure water acidity) of 5.5 because carbon dioxide will get into the rain and pollute it.  If water is pure like drinking water it has a pH of 7.0. Acid rain has a pH of anything less than 5.5. Since 2000 in the U.S.A. the average pH of acid rain is around 4.3, which is pretty bad.
